Cacao trees waiting to be planted in “La Fortuna” estate, San Rafael, Magdalena department. “From age five I have memories of planting trees with my dad”, Johny Serrano says. He is a 22-year-old entrepreneur from San Rafael, former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. “I remember my dad making vivariums. He went to the river looking for manure, rotten wood, soil… And we used that to fill the bags. I helped him, and we filled around eight hundred, a thousand little bags in order to plant soursops, avocados, coffee, and cacao, of course”. Johny’s family has grown cacao since 2005. Since last year, though, with the help of “Anfitriones para la Paz” course, Johny has started to bet on tourism: he created “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra), a tourist route around the history, the harvesting, and the transformation of cacao beans. “It helped us see another way”, Johny says regarding the course, which leaves behind a small business that gathers five local families. |
