Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Leydis Odor and Eduard Serrando are former students of the “Magdalena’s regional cuisine” course.

Both Leidys and Eduard work in some way in the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, the experience created by Johny Serrano around the growing and preparation of cacao beans. On one hand, Eduard is Johny’s brother, and he is in charge of the meals and refreshments for the visitors. Leydis, on the other hand, is part of the small business “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), a group of women who work with cacao and make from nibs and chocolate bars to facemask treatments with it. This business is a crucial part of the “Cacao de la Sierra” experience, by showing visitors how the cacao bean is transformed into chocolate.

Both Leidys and Eduard found the opportunity to improve their gastronomical skills with the “Magdalena’s regional cuisine” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative. Cristina Arrieta, national coordinator for “Anfitriones para la Paz”, says that young people in Colombia, especially those who live in rural areas, face several barriers: “barriers related to access to quality education; barriers related to access to employment and business opportunities; and there’s also other factors related to climate change, access to markets, and their exposure to the armed conflict”.

One of the ways in which “Anfitriones para la Paz” has overcome these barriers is with their mobile school, which allows them to teach food and cooking in far-off territories.

“Anfitriones para la paz” is an initiative part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation with IFAD’s financial and technical support.
