Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Muhaiyo Kamalova, 36 years old, lives in Chal Cahl Village in the Nurak District in central Tajikstan together with her husband and three children. Although she can see the mighty Vakhsh River flowing swiftly through the valley just down the hillside from her home, she and her neighbours lacked access to running water until 2023.

The whole community lacked water. No one in her village grew fruit or vegetables. With CASP support, the VO installed a pumping station to bring water from the river to a water tank for distribution to 30 households in her neighbourhood. Now, each of those households has clean drinking water, and water for their livestock and household plots.

“I have a small orchard now where I grow vegetables and pomegranates. I also have livestock. My women neighbours and I produce for ourselves, and we sell fruit and vegetables. It is a new livelihood for us.”

When she is not gardening, Muhaiyo milks her cow, bakes bread, does laundry and takes care of the children. Having easy access to clean, running water has relieved her of the burden of carrying water, and even given her an opportunity to generate income from her gardening.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
