Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Leidys Odor is former student of the “Magdalena’s regional cuisine” course.

“My grandmother was an expert cook who devoted herself to helping the community, making ‘ollas comunitarias’ (common pots)”, Leydis says, when talking about where her passion for cooking comes from. “When there were people displaced from their homes here in the region, back in 2003, she was one of the people who made food to help the most needed”.

Her grandmother also left her a deep love for regional cuisine. “I liked her “sancocho de guandul” (pigeon pea soup) with salted meat”, Ladies says. After being displaced from her home in 2010, she started a small business of “fritos costeños” (fried food from Colombia’s Caribbean coast) in Bogotá, with which she shared the flavors of her home region. This was the reason why she took the “Magdalena’s regional cuisine” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative: “I was interested because it was a course rescuing Magdalena’s food, something lost so many years ago”.

After returning to her homeland, now Leidys is part of the small business “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), a collective of five women who specialize in transforming cacao from the Sierra Nevada in different products, from cacao nibs to chocolate bars. This collective works alongside Johny Serrano’s business, “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, creating a business in which agriculture, sustainable tourism and cacao-based products are linked.
