Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona Woman) Chocolate bar, made with cacao from the Santa Marta’s Sierra Nevada region. On the land, as well as cocoa, a variety of local fruits, such as coconut, guayaba, lemon, are grown.

“Mujer Tayrona” is a small business created by five women from San Rafael and its surroundings, who farm and transform cacao. Leidys Odor, one of these women and former student of the “Magdalena’s regional cuisine” course offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative, says they have a dream of being able to export their quality chocolate. “We have orders even from places like Thailand, but we’re working on our sanitary register in order to make that kind of shipping”, she says.

The “Mujer Tayrona'' collective articulated their venture with the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, created by Johny Serrano, a former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz”. In this route, he takes visitors to see first-hand a cacao plantation, and how its fruits are transformed into products such as chocolate. “While we take the tourists through the plantation, these women transform cacao”, Johny says. This brand of cacao products, in which Johny’s mom is involved, offers a wide array of products made with local materials: from cacao nibs and chocolate bars, to butter and even face mask treatments. “The goal is to keep growing by bringing our neighbours; make communal tourism”.

The “Cacao de la Sierra” tourist route was born at the end of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation with IFAD’s financial and technical support. Their work in Colombia has reached Bogotá, Putumayo, Nariño, Valle del Cauca, Magdalena, and La Guajira.

This initiative provides technical training to Colombian young adults who live in rural areas, giving them knowledge about cuisine, table and bar serving, bakery, pastry and confectionery, accommodation services, tourism operations, and digital content creation.
