Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: On the “La Fortuna” estate, San Rafael, Magdalena department, the irrigation system has been specifically designed for the cacao plantation.

“In the last 10 years the weather has changed in astonishing ways”, says Johny Serrano, 22-year-old and cacao farmer. “In rainy months, we had rain the whole thirty days. But now temperatures are rising, and rain doesn’t fall that often”.

Climate change jeopardizes cacao plantations, facing plagues and withering. “The water sources have a weaker flow; the droughts are hitting harder, which withers cacao. These are variants which influence the cacao we grow here”. This is why Johny’s family has started to create irrigation systems using water from an underground well.

Aside from preparing his crops for climate change, Johny is also starting to find new ways of adding value to his plantation thanks to tourism: after taking the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, Johny created a tourist route which allows visitors to see how cacao is grown… And, at the same time, it allows him, his family, and other community members who take part in this enterprise to generate income through tourism.
