Cacao fruit in the “La Fortuna” estate, in San Rafael, Magdalena department. Johny Serrano, cacao farmer and 22-year-old entrepreneur, guides tourists who visit his family’s estate through the cacao trees that grow there. A cacao tree isn’t productive until its fourth year after being planted. Once it reaches maturity, that single tree yields around 1 kilo of cacao beans per harvest, with three harvests each year. Johny took the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. Thanks to this training, he has turned his family’s plantation and his own knowledge about cacao into a touristic asset for every traveller who visits the region. “Thanks to the support of IFAD, we have been able to articulate agriculture, cacao-based products, and sustainable tourism”, Johny says. |
