Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: For Johny, “Cacao de la Sierra” is a project that has been built alongside so many people: his partner Camilo Chinchillo, with whom he offers the tours; the group “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona Woman), who show tourists all the products in which cacao can become; the friends from his community, and even his family. “My parents have always been a support”, Johny says, reflecting that maybe he wouldn’t have been able to kick-start his business without help from his parents and siblings. “Family is . key. They are the ones who help you get up and continue”.

Johny wants to make his business grow, and even help the community itself grow thanks to tourism. “I have friends who also have cacao plantations, and they have told me they also want to create a cacao tour”, Johny says. “I tell them ‘I’ll be glad to help you. I have the knowledge, and I can help you do it’. The goal is to keep growing by bringing our neighbours; make communal tourism”, Johny says.

The “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course which Johny took is offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative, and it’s part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. As a result of this training, he and Johny Serrano created the “Cacao de las Sierra '' tourist route, an experience around cacao cultivation and transformation. This initiative sees food and tourism as part of the financial growth of rural communities. In Colombia, they have already trained over 700 young adults in La Guajira, Nariño, Magdalena, and Putumayo departments.
