Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Camilo Chinchilla is a 29-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative. He’s the creator of the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, alongside Johny Serrano.

For Camilo, this region is a paradise that, little by little, has been welcoming more tourists since the end of the Colombian armed conflict. “This area is the green gold of Santa Marta, of Colombia”, says Camilo, talking about its beaches, mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and a great variety of fauna and flora. “And mostly its people: very thoughtful, too kind”.

Camilo took the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. As a result of this training, he and Johny Serrano created the “Cacao de las Sierra '' tourist route, an experience around cacao cultivation and transformation.

Training as the one he undertook is crucial for young people in the region, according to Camilo. “These initiatives are quite necessary, because there’s a big number of young people who don’t have the possibility of studying, of gathering the tools to get ahead in life”, he says. “There are very few opportunities for young people around here. Programs like the one offered by ‘Anfitriones para la Paz’ and IFAD come to the territories, offer training for the boys and girls, and that way they can get different choices when it comes to work”.

This project contemplates a multisectoral coordination with different entities: farmers, restaurants, local organizations, NGOs, and public and private sectors. All this in order to ensure sustainability on the long-term of all these efforts.
