In the middle of the cacao plantation of the “La Fortuna” estate, in San Rafael, reads “Let us take care of the environment for a better future”. For Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative. Caring of the environment is crucial: after all, caring for the environment is caring for the cacao crops which have sustained him and his family since 2005. This is the reason why Johny and his family have transitioned to more environmentally-friendly practices, such as only using organic products in their crops. It is also the reason why Johny seeked in the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course a way to generate income through his plantation and his land, an environmentally sustainable and responsible alternative. The result is the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, which shows the whole process of cacao cultivation and transformation. This is what the courses offered by “Anfitriones para la Paz” aim to do: provide young adults in rural areas the tools to create businesses around food and tourism; businesses that can be both financially and environmentally sustainable. |
