Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Abaid Huseynov is an agricultural machinery who operates the tractor for the Chal Chal Village Organization (VO) located in the Norak District of central Tajikistan. The 40-year-old lives in Norak together with his wife and four children. Abaid is also a farmer and holds a part-time job in the power grid unit of the department of power engineering.

The VO identified agricultural machinery as a priority in their community development plan and received the tractor, together with a baling machine and a plough, from the project.

“CASP has supported us greatly. Before, as we did not have the agriculture machinery, our cultivation and harvesting was delayed. We used to do everything manually – cut the hay and then collect it. Everything was so hard and difficult. Now, we no longer have this problem.”

The VO Chief manages the agricultural machine services, such as hay baling and field preparation. Abaid gets his work orders from the Chief and goes out to cut and bale hay for clients who pay for the service. The Village Organization earns money, and Abaid and his assistant are paid 30 per cent of the contract price.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
