Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Cacao fruits of different varieties (criollo, forastero, and trinitario) are grown in the “La Fortuna” estate in San Rafael, Magdalena department.

“We have a very special cacao”, says Johny Serrano, 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz'' (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People'' project. Johny says that those fruity and aniseed fragrances that characterize cacao beans coming out of the Sierra Nevada region, are what have warranted them such fame in the chocolate industry.

And not satisfied with that fame, Johny’s family has also started to bet on organic crops, avoiding the use of fertilizers and artificial pesticides. “Obviously, the tree doesn’t produce as much, but the quality of the cacao is far better than when you use chemical composts”. The result is a cacao bean that Johny and his family not only sell with pride, but exhibit with pride as well: Johny is the creator of the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, a tour which shows the process of cultivating and transforming cacao beans.

This route was born as Johny’s final project in the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. With its technical training, this initiative aims to provide young adults in rural areas of Colombia the tools to rescue and revalue local products and services, through the lenses of food and tourism.

Johny’s venture works in conjunction with the women group “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), who were also trained by the project and now produce chocolates and products derived from cacao. They also prepare local dishes with cacao, and have a recipe book which helps them to keep alive their gastronomy traditions. Now, these businesses articulate farming, gastronomy and tourism.
