Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: The “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona Woman) Chocolate bars are made with cacao from Santa Marta’s Sierra Nevada region.

Johny Serrano is the 22-year-old entrepreneur who created the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, in which he takes visitors to see first-hand a cacao plantation, and how its fruits are transformed into products such as chocolate. However, the experience Johny offers wouldn’t be complete if they didn’t get to taste what those cacao beans turn into. It is at that point where the “Mujer Tayrona” small business steps in.

“My project brings another group of women called ‘Mujer Tayrona’: a group of five women who, while we take the tourists through the plantation, they transform cacao”. This brand of cacao products, in which Johny’s mom is involved, offers a wide array of products made with local materials: from cacao nibs and chocolate bars, to butter and even face mask treatments.

For Johny, his business is an anchor in which different members of the community, former “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) courses students, and even family and friends get together… And the idea is to keep it that way. “The goal is to keep growing by bringing our neighbors; make communal tourism”, Johny says.

The “Cacao de la Sierra” tourist route was born at the end of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation with IFAD’s financial and technical support. Their work in Colombia has reached Bogotá, Putumayo, Nariño, Valle del Cauca, Magdalena, and La Guajira.

This initiative provides technical training to Colombian young adults who live in rural areas, giving them knowledge about cuisine, table and bar serving, bakery, pastry and confectionery, accommodation services, tourism operations, and digital content creation.
