Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace) and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project.

Johny offers a tour through his family’s estate called “Cacao de la Sierra”. In it, he and his partner take tourists from all over the country and the world through the cacao plantations, explaining to them how the cacao almond is grown, harvested, and transformed.

Although most people in the world have surely tasted chocolate, Johny says very few actually know where it comes from, what a cacao fruit looks like, how a bean is transformed into chocolate. When they see the cacao fruit they say, ‘wow, this is cacao? Always thought it was something else”, Johny says. He also says that, when tourists try the sweet pulp of cacao, also called mucilage, many of them wonder “why don’t they sell it like this?!”.

Johny’s business came out of the the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. According to Cristina Arrieta, national coordinator for the initiative, around 700 young adults in Colombia have received training regarding food and tourism. Out of this number, around 70% have managed to increase their income after the program.
