Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and cacao farmer.

Alongside his partner, Camillo Chinchilla (29 years old), Johny created the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, an experience which shows visitors how is cacao cultivated and transformed, how does that fruit start to become one of the world’s most popular candies: chocolate.

Johny takes tourists from when cacao trees are just sprouts, to the moment they yield their first harvest, to the flavors of the fruit’s pulp and the extraction of the beans, all the way to the moment they are fermented and dried. “When they see the cacao fruit they say, ‘wow, this is cacao? Always thought it was something else’’”, Johny says.

Johny set up the “Cacao de La Sierra” venture working jointly with the women group “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), who were also trained by the project and now produce chocolates and products derived from cacao. They also prepare local dishes with cacao, and have a recipe book which helps them to keep alive their gastronomy traditions. Now, these businesses articulate farming, gastronomy and tourism.

The “Cacao de la Sierra” tourist route, which gathers different people from the community, was born in the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace) and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation with IFAD’s financial and technical support.
