Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace) and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project. He’s standing in front of his family’s estate, “La Fortuna”.

The “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route starts at this point, at the entrance of the two hectares of land in which Johny and his family grow and harvest cacao beans. They have been doing it since 2005, shortly after they received these lands from the Colombian government, after their forced displacement. Along with the land came around 1.200 cacao trees, part of the government’s effort in substituting coca and marijuana crops.

Johny and his partner, Camilo Chinchilla, came up with the idea of a tourist experience a year ago, as their final project in the course offered by “Anfitriones para la Paz”. “Many other students already had a route ready, we were the only group without one”, Johny says”. “My mom belongs to a group of women who work and transform cacao, so we thought, ‘why not make a cacao experience?’”.

Now, their business links farming, gastronomy and tourism.

Although the logistics of establishing this route was somewhat complicated, for Johny it felt pretty natural to work in something around cacao trees. “It felt close to me, because I already had experience: 18 years of experience with cacao, practically”
