Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: “La Fortuna” estate, located in San Rafael, Magdalena department.

This is the first stop in the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route, which 22-year-old Johny Serrano offers alongside a partner in his family’s estate, “La Fortuna” (The Fortune). This plot of land was handed to them in 2005 by the Colombian government, alongside 1.200 cacao trees ready to be planted, after being forcefully displaced from their land two years prior, in the midst of Colombia’s armed conflict.

The name “La Fortuna” was Johny’s parents' idea. “We went from a moment in the middle of the armed conflict in which we had nothing, and when we got this land… It was like a fortune. We went from having nothing, to having something. This is a family treasure”.

Johny’s family has cultivated cacao here since 2005. A year ago Johny undertook the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace), part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project (developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD), Since then, he has found a new use for his family’s “fortune”: turn it into a tourist experience around the history and preparation of cacao.

Now, their business links farming, gastronomy and tourism.
