Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace), crossing the Piedra river.

For Johny, who since he was five has been surrounded by cacao trees, the course offered by “Anfitriones para la Paz'' was an eye-opening experience. “They trained us so we could innovate, so we could find new ways to make the best out of our plantations”, he says.

Out of this training the “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra) tourist route was born: a tour through the cacao plantations Johny and his family own, a way of showing the process of farming and transforming this crop.

With a bold vision, Jhony set up the “Cacao de La Sierra” venture, working jointly with the women group “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), who were also trained on local gastronomy by the project. Now, their business articulates farming, gastronomy, and tourism.

The “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative is part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, developed by ICCO Cooperation in partnership with IFAD. This initiative aims to use food and tourism as part of the economic growth of rural communities, and its work in Colombia has reached Bogotá, Putumayo, Nariño, Valle del Cauca, Magdalena, and La Guajira.
