Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: Johny Serrano is a 22-year-old entrepreneur and former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative (Hosts for Peace) and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project.

Along with his partner Camilo Chinchilla, Johny created the touirst route “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra), which offers an experience around cacao plantations. “At first I tripped my tongue quite a lot”, Johny says, remembering all the difficulties around kick-starting his business in his family’s estate.

Even so, Johny felt sure his idea had potential: it was both unique and novel. “One tries to look for innovation. That’s how you attract tourism: innovating, making new things, things which haven’t been seen in the area”.

Today, “Cacao de la Sierra” brings a stable income for Johny and his family, as for the other people of the community who work in this project. And as Johny, over 700 young adults in Colombia have been trained by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” initiative, which sees food and tourism as as part of the financial growth of rural communities in La Guajira, Nariño, Magdalena, and Putumayo departments.
