Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: "La Fortuna” estate, in San Rafael, Magdalena Department. The house with orange roof is a hostel built by the Serrano family.

Years ago, Johny Serrano (22 years old), along with his parents and his siblings, started to work on a dream. “In 2010, with my family, we started our dream of creating our own hostel”, Johny says.

Even though the Serranos had plenty of experience in growing cacao, they weren’t that savvy when it came to the hospitality and tourism sector. “Because I didn’t know much, I went to other hostels to work and gain some experience”, Johny says, remembering he took jobs such as waiter and receptionist.
Before taking the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz'' initiative (Hosts for Peace) and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” project, Johny had a very rough idea of what hospitality and tourism were about. “I thought it was easy; I thought it was just to let them sleep in one bed and that’s it. Well, it’s not it. We have to offer our guests an experience”.

After taking the course, Johny and his partner Camilo Chinchilla designed a tour which shows visitors the process of growing and harvesting cacao; a tour which has brought new value to their lands as a tourist attraction.

With a bold vision, Johny set up the “Cacao de La Sierra” venture, working jointly with the women group “Mujer Tayrona” (Tayrona woman), who were also trained on local gastronomy by the project. Now, their business articulates farming, gastronomy, and tourism.
