Title: Colombia - Puentes/Rural for Young People – November 2023
Description: The surroundings of San Rafael and the Piedra river, Magdalena department.

“This is a magical place, where you can find all sorts of plants, birds, water sources, beautiful beaches… This place has it all”. That’s how 22-year-old Johny Serrano describes this region. Johny is a former student of the “Touristic experiences and circuits design” course, offered by the “Anfitriones para la Paz” (Hosts for Peace) initiative and part of the “Puentes/Rural for Young People” IFAD-financed project, implemented by ICCO Cooperation.

In this “vereda” [administrative subdivision of a municipality] is where Johny and his family have their land, two hectares mainly used for growing cacao. Seeking to diversify their income and imbue new value to their crops through tourism, Johny and his partner Camilo Chinchilla created “Cacao de la Sierra” (Cacao from the Sierra), a touristic route that shows visitors the process of cultivating and preparing the cacao beans which will eventually become chocolate.

This idea was born out of the course offered by “Anfitriones para la Paz”, which helped Johny to “look for ways to take advantage of the resources we have here” through tourism. “For me, ‘Anfitriones para la Paz’ helped me grow both in knowledge, and as a person”, he says.

“Anfitriones para la Paz” is a local economic development initiative, financed by IFAD, which generates opportunities in rural and peri-urban areas, through the tourism and gastronomy sectors. This model offers training programs in cooking, accommodation services, and tourism for young people, who are also committed to protecting the diversity, identity, and knowledge of local products.
