Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Abunasr Iskandar, 30 years old, is the leader of his Common Interest Group (CIG) for cattle breeding in Jafr Village in north-eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht District.

“When I get up in the morning, I come to visit my bull. I take care of him, feed and groom him. And then I go do my other farming work.”

Abunasr attended a workshop CASP held in the village in 2020. He enthusiastically expressed interest in the livestock breeding activity because he and his parents own livestock and he saw an opportunity to improve their herd, as well as the cattle of others in the village. Abunasr received one of the two purebred Simmental bulls CASP provided to Jafr village.

“We have many bush cows in the community. The higher number of cattle impacts the vegetation cover, the grasslands. Bush cows don’t give much milk. We have these bulls in order to have a better breed and reduce the number of cattle. We will have cows that give more milk.”

The Simmental is a good breed and the local people like it. Between May and October 2023, Abunasr’s bull inseminated 23 cows. Five of them were his own, while the others belong to community members. He charges 50 somoni (about US$ 4.50) for each insemination and uses the money he earns to buy feed for the bull.

Abunasr has lots of things to do around the farm. His family has apple orchards and a plot of land where they cultivate potatoes and tomatoes, and where they make hay to feed their cattle during the winter months.
“I would like to thank IFAD, as well as the Government of Tajikistan. Thanks so much.”

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
