Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description: The women in Mohinav Village in the Dusti district of southwestern Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region learned the art of weaving from their mothers and grandmothers and are now passing the traditional knowledge on to their daughters and other young women in the village. It takes about 15 days to make one large cotton rug. The women weavers use the rugs in their own homes, but also sell them, earning about somoni 300 per rug (US$30).

With the income the Village Organization earned from their agricultural machinery and contributions paid into the village organization’s budget by the women’s income generating groups, it was able to sponsor the group of women to set up an income-generating activity weaving traditional rugs. The village organization bought yarn and tools and paid young men from the community to craft the weaving looms.

The women enjoy weaving during our leisure time. When they don’t have other chores to do, they gather, and visit and weave.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
