Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description:

Mrs. Lam Kim Thuy, a 57-year-old woman with 2 children (right) and Ms. Tran Ngoc Dep (left) prepare freshly cut grasses for weaving.

Thuy has a wealth of experience in growing grasses used for weaving traditional mats. As a member of Women Union Saving & Credit group, she was able to access micro-credits and technical support. After five rounds of borrowing, Thuy’s assets and income significantly increased. She was able to acquire a two-hectare field for growing grasses and buy two weaving machines. Her increased income has moved her family from a near-poor situation to being better off. Her monthly average income is VND 4.5 million (US$ 185).

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) helped the local Women Union in Duc My hamlet, Duc My commune, Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province establish a Saving & Credit group. Through the Women Union’s Saving & Credit group, 19 local women can access non-collateral small loans (micro-credits) and accrue their savings, as well as technical support through a project-supported Women Development Fund. In this way, women have been able to acquire access to land for growing grasses and buy the machinery they need to produce traditional grass mats.

Throughout Vietnamese history, grass-mats hold a place of tradition in households, especially in hot climate areas. A good quality well-treated mat can last for 5-7 years and is used for many domestic purposes.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
