Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description: Members of the Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) for fruit and vegetable preservation and canning in Jafr Village in north-eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht District.

Fall is a busy time of year for the group.s 15 members. Fruits and vegetables are harvested and the women use the equipment they received from the project to preserve and can them. CASP provided 570 one-litre jars and 570 two-litre capacity jars. They also received sugar, jar lids, two mixers and cooking pots, as well as training on different methods of canning.

Life was hard for the women before. But things have improved since the project provided them with support for preserving and selling vegetables. The women share their skills and experience and learn from each other, and they support each other in hard times. The project helped them come together and run their business.

In the past, the women did not have the resources to preserve much and used to lose much of their fruits and vegetables. With the support they received from CASP, they now preserve and sell them. They are also food secure because they keep enough canned fruits and vegetables for themselves to last throughout the winter.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
