Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Zulhijamo Davlatova is the leader of the Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) for fruit and vegetable preservation and canning in Jafr Village in north-eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht District. A widow, she lives together with her daughter.

Fall is a busy time of year for the 15 members of Zulhijamo’s group. Fruits and vegetables are harvested and the women use the equipment they received from the project to preserve and can them. CASP provided 570 one-litre jars and 570 two-litre capacity jars. They also received sugar, jar lids, two mixers and cooking pots, as well as training on different methods of canning.

The women are also skilled bakers and sell bread to supplement their income. They bake bread for their own consumption, but the villagers know they bake good bread and order from them.

“Before, life was hard. Since the project provided us with support for preserving and selling vegetables, we have a better life. We share our skills and experience and learn from each other, and we support each other in hard times. The project helped us come together and run this business. Our lives changed - we have managed to overcome the difficulties of life.”

In the past, the women did not have the resources to preserve much and used to lose much of their fruits and vegetables. With the support they received from CASP, they now preserve and sell them. They are also food secure because they are able to keep enough for themselves to last throughout the winter.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
