Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description: Honey produced by the Common Interest Group (CIG) for beekeeping in Jafr Village, in Tajikistan’s northeastern Rasht District. The group’s ten members had bees in the past but did not have the opportunity to continue with them for various reasons. CASP provided each member with two hives. During the first year, each member established two or three new bee families. The group didn’t produce much honey during the first year – just 35-40 kg per hive – but had much better production during the second and third years as the bees became established, increasing to about 100 kg per hive. Currently in their fourth year, they expect to produce at least that amount per hive, but have also increased the number of hives they each have. With the money they are earning, they buy things they need for the household and tools for beekeeping. They are careful to leave enough honey in the hives for the bees to feed on over the winter.

The group’s members produce not only honey. When they clean the hives they also collect propolis and wax. The wax can be chewed or used to get other wax by-products by melting it. They even use the bees’ venom for medical purposes.

Bees feed from mountain flowers that are not contaminated with chemicals. The honey they produce is pure and curative. It is medicinal. With a growing number of hives, the group is expanding production as their main livelihood source. They always have clients ready to buy their honey.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
