Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Zabarjat SHARIPOVA is the head of the Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) for poultry production in Jafr Village, in Tajikistan’s northeastern Rasht District. She is one of eight women, each of whom received ten turkeys. Before joining the group, the women didn't have alternative sorts of income. Now they earn a good income selling eggs. They have also hatched 200 eggs using the incubator they received from the project, thus multiplying the number of poultry they each have.

Zabarjat knew she wanted to participate in the group as soon as she heard the Village Organization Chief announce the opportunity. She has increased her gaggle from the original ten up to fifty turkeys – selling 25 of them for a good profit.

“Poultry – chickens and turkeys – is my livelihood. We earn profit from the eggs and from the poultry themselves. We are getting good income and now we are doing well. I can boast that none of my children are in labour migration.”

Zabarjat has a household plot where her poultry can range free and where she grows apples. She also has a greenhouse where she grows produce that she sells in the market and uses for her own consumption. Although food prices have gone up recently, especially for oil and flour, Zabarjat is able to buy what she needs thanks to her new income.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
