Title: Argentina - Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) – November 2022
Description: Ángela Fernández is 55 years old and has lived all her life in a rural area southeast of the province of Neuquén, in Argentina. She was born in Ojo de Agua, a place located about 60 kilometers from the town of Piedra del Águila, and when she married, she moved to Cerro Horqueta, about 15 kilometers from there. She has three children and is devoted to goat production but recognizes that the new generations are not interested in dedicating their lives to working in the fields. “Young people leave for the town because they see that animal husbandry doesn’t bring any profit,” she says. “When the drought came, it was all over: only the elders were left and the animals were dying,” she describes, referring to the effects of climate change in the region.

Support through the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA) enabled Ángela and nine other producer families in the department of Catan Lil to receive investments to improve their workplaces, building sheds or erecting enclosures, installing solar pumps to obtain water, and carrying out other works on their land, in addition to community benefits and technical assistance.

The aim of the Goat Value Chain Development Programme (PRODECCA), is to help small goat farmers in Argentina increase, enhance and market their production of meat, dairy products and fibre, especially mohair and cashmere.

The programme is expected to benefit a total of 8,000 families across the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Mendoza, Neuquén and Santiago del Estero, home to about some 60 per cent of the country's goat herds.
