Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description: Post-harvest preliminary pre-processing, packaging and preservation of green-skinned pomelo

Mr. Huynh Vu Son, 42 years old, farms green-skinned pomelos in Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre Province. In 2020, the Adaptation in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) project provided Son a loan of VND 300 million co-investment (US$ 12,000) that enabled him to construct a cold storage facility and transform his collection and trading hub into a thriving post-harvest packaging and preservation centre. The new operation helped increase the value of agricultural products, such as the green-skinned pomelo, by improving quality and creating a stable market for growers.

“I saw people growing pomelos and selling them to traders outside the province with unstable prices, unable to connect with local production businesses. I filled the gap.”

Post-harvest preservation plays a crucial role in agriculture, especially fruit production. With the new cold storage, Son’s capacity to purchase farmers’ products – primarily green pomelos and durian -- has been strengthened due to its ability to preserve fruit for a longer time. Moreover, the Huynh Son facility is providing a stable income for its almost 60 contract farmers and five stable employees, of whom half are from poor or near-poor households and a third are women.

Trading in green pomelos nets Son’s facility an average profit of VND 25 million (US$ 1,030) per month. He has plans to expand the growing area from which he sources produce and to establish contracts with more farmers who grow durian, rambutan, as well as green-skinned pomelo.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
