Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Matthews Mikeyas a 20-year-old living with his parents in Juma village, GUH Binalui TA Somba, Ntonda extension planning area, Blantyre, assists his family with rabbit farming. As a result of cyclone Freddy, Matthews faced a number of losses, including the destruction of the rabbits’ hutch and the death of the rabbits.

Matthews was one of the farmers selected to take part in the CRI. The extension worker for the area trained him on rabbit farming, including the construction of a modern hutch, feeding, and disease prevention. Furthermore, he was taught to use the rabbit manure as fertiliser for his crops, maize and pigeon peas. Some of the rabbits he will use for personal consumption, improving his family’s nutritional profile, while the rest he will sell.

Matthews expects a rise in production of the crops due to manure application and plans to expand his rabbit farming. With the additional income earned from the rabbits, he also aims to purchase other livestock, such as goats.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
