Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Asadkhan AHMADZODA is a 43 year old farmer in Gazantarak Village located in Devashtich District in northern Tajikistan’s Sugd Region. He is the head of the Ghazantarak Turdiev dehkan farm, which he has managed for several years. In the past, the farm had problems to access agricultural machine services. These days, his neighbor farmer, Sami Juraev, manages an Agricultural Machinery Service Provider that he established with the support of the CASP. Equipped with a new tractor and farming attachments, Asadkhan finds the services he is looking for just next door.

“Before, we did not have such easy access to machines and had to go to faraway districts to find these services. Now, with the Sami Juraev tractor service, we can plough our fields in a timely manner and the quality of the service is ensured. It also costs us about 50 per cent less. I am a very happy customer.”

There are about 20 dehkan farmers like Asadkhan in the area who farm up to about 1,000 hectares of land. He runs one of the seven irrigated farms, each with about 20 hectares, that grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as melons, onions and carrots. The surrounding arable land is very fertile but is rain-fed, making it suitable only for winter grain crops. Without access to the agricultural machinery services provided by Sami Juraev, it would be impossible for them to plough and prepare their land in a timely manner.
