Title: Nigeria - Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises, Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) – November 2023
Description: Abayomi Olubumi, 35 years old, is a cocoa farmer from the Ipoba Ojomu Community, Idanre Local Government in southwestern Nigeria, known as Nigeria’s major cocoa production region. Through the LIFE-ND project, Abayomi learned to practice an advanced cocoa fermentation technique called box fermentation.

Using the box fermentation method, Abayomi meticulously removes wet cocoa beans from the pod and places them into a wooden box lined with fresh banana leaves. She covers the box with banana leaves and jute sacks to conserve the heat created by the fermentation. Liquids produced during the process drain away from the slatted bottom of the wooden box. She turns the beans every two days to ensure proper aeration and thorough mixing throughout the process that takes between six and eight days, depending on weather conditions.

This innovative method has significantly elevated the quality of her cocoa beans compared to the previous method she used that took just two or three days. Buyers pay a premium market price for the improved quality, which has a more intense aroma.

The IFAD-funded Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project in southern Nigeria helps rural youth and women make a living from agriculture. The project uses an incubator model to help unemployed or underemployed rural youth and women develop entrepreneurial skills, enabling them to sustainably enhance their incomes and food security, and embrace agriculture as a business. The goal of LIFE-ND is to transform the rural economy of the oil-rich Niger Delta region by harnessing the potential of agriculture to create income-generating activities for 25,500 rural young people, women-headed households, and people with disabilities (incubatees). Incubatees are mentored by established private-sector incubators along key agricultural value chains.
