Title: Tanzania - Reversing Land Degradation trends and increasing Food Security in degraded ecosystems of semi-arid areas of Tanzania (LDFS) – July 2023
Description: Christina, a small-scale farmer and project participant in the LDFS project, from Haubi village beams with joy over bounty harvest. Like many in the region, she previously faced challenges due to dry weather, exacerbated by climate change.

“People in the area have been cutting down trees for a long time. This has contributed to the climate change we are experiencing now. I call upon our leaders to help us protect and conserve our environment. It is important for Africa.”

With the support from LDFS, farmers in the area including Christian formed farmer field schools where they are trained on good agronomic practices like the minimum tillage pits and nine-seed technology. These methods not only improve soil health and moisture retention but also lead to significant yield increases.

“I normally plant maize, but the yield is not good. With the training we have gotten I have seen a great change; my yields have increased significantly. These technologies are good, and farmers should learn them. “

Christina's success story extends beyond personal gain. Her abundant harvest contributes to the community's food security and economic well-being. It also serves as an inspiration to other farmers, encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices for a brighter future.

Reversing Land Degradation trends and increasing Food Security in degraded ecosystems of semi-arid areas of central Tanzania (LDFS) is one of 12 national projects under the Integrated Approach Pilot program on Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Sub-Saharan Africa (IAPFS). The project focuses on geographic areas with high levels of poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition of children under 5 years of age, land degradation and average annual rainfall. It also centres on areas where there may be conflict among communities related to access to and use of crop, grass and forest land and water resources.
