Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description:
Mr. Tran Minh Truyen, 51 years old and married with two children, is the leader and one of the ten members of an innovative Common Interest Group (CIG) raising giant freshwater prawns (only male) in their rice fields. In 2018, The Adaptation in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) project provided co-investment through its revolving funds facility that enabled the ten rice farmers in Thanh My hamlet, My An commune, Thanh Phu district, Ben Tre province to establish the CIG and to start implementing the prawn-rice production model. With the funds received, the farmers purchased breeding stock and feed.

Before joining the project, the CIG members raised some livestock, produced sporadically and spontaneously with little technical training, depending primarily on the modest income they earned from growing and selling rice. Their livelihoods have been significantly improved by raising prawns.

Mr. Truyen grows rice and raises prawns in his two hectares of rice fields. Four months after stocking their rice fields the first time, he and the other farmers harvested prawns, each one earning a profit of about VND 15 million (US$ 615) per hectare. They typically farm two rice crops and harvest prawns two times per year. Supplementing what he earns from selling rice, his annual average income has increased to VND 60 million (US$ 2,500).

“Since receiving the loan from AMD, we have switched from just growing rice to simultaneously using the flooded rice fields to culture giant freshwater prawns. Using money I’ve earned selling prawns since 2018, I have been able build a spacious home for my family and buy a new 1.5 hectare rice field near my home.”

The Group's model has gained the attention and been introduced to many other people in the area. Tran and the other group members have benefited from technical support to promote farmer-to-farmer training delivered by ADM in cooperation with various specialized organizations. With these efforts, ADM has empowered the project participants to sustainably increase their incomes and build a successful livelihood model that is being replicated through self-learning process to other farmers in the area.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
