Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description:
The wife of Mr. Nguyen Van Ngot, a member the Dinh Cu River Blood Cockles Cooperative Common Interest Group, cleans cockles together with another member of the cooperative. The group farms blood cockles in a three-hectare area of a brackish water in the Xep Lay River that flows near Mrs. Nguyen’s home. After washing the cockles, the group will sell them to large offtakers, earning about VND 100 - 120 million from their annual crop (TUS$ 4-5).

With US$ 5,000 received in 2018 from the Adaptation in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) project, the ten members of the Dinh Cu River Blood Cockles Cooperative, a Common Interest Group in Dinh Cu hamlet, added US$ 2,300 of their own money and invested in 800 kg of seed clams, made nets, and employed labor to improve riverside mudflats to develop blood calm farming on 0.6 hectares of water surface. The clams, which feed on natural food sources, grow for eight months in the river’s brackish water, unimpacted by salinity intrusion. Breeding normally takes place from April to July with harvesting eight months to one year later.

Tra Vinh Province is greatly affected by climate change. Natural disasters and extreme climate events are increasing, and salinity intrusion is damaging agriculture and aquaculture in the area, reducing rice, vegetable and fruit productivity and crop quality. AMD is supporting people to build alternative livelihoods, helping them adapt to climate change, thereby enabling many poor and near-poor households escape poverty.

With the added investment, cooperative members have increased their production from 1,2 tons to 2 tons per harvest. Members share the profit equally, with each earning about VND 8 million (US$ 330) per annual harvest after selling to large offtakers. They supplement that income from renovating, preparing farms, harvesting and categorizing clams, with wages ranging from VND100,000 - VND150,000 per person per day (US$ 4-6). They cooperative keeps about VND 100 million for reproduction of the new crop to ensure the self-sustainability of their enterprise.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
