Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description: Muhabbat Mahmudova was born in 1950 and lives in Ghazantarak Village located in Devashtich District in northern Tajikistan’s Sugd Region. Her household comprises 15 people, including her husband and one of her daughters, both of whom are disabled. She describes her living conditions as poor.

Muhabbat is a member of the village organization and is one of 15 members of a women’s income generating group (WIGG) for sheep breeding established by the CASP project. Each member of the group received 3 sheep, as well as training on livestock husbandry and marketing. She has been caring for her sheep, and they have reproduced. She now has six sheep.

Life was very hard for Muhabbat and her neighbours before. They did not have access to clean drinking water in their homes, instead queuing for up to five hours each day to collect water from one of the community taps. In 2022, CASP drilled two water wells and laid 18 km of pipe to bring clean drinking water to every household in the village. Now, Muhabbat has easy access to water for her household needs, and can also use the water for her sheep and to irrigate her household garden. She is looking forward to the completion of the irrigation system that is currently under construction.

“Lately we don’t get much rain here and we don’t get a good yield from our rainfed fields. Once we have irrigation, we will be able to double our income.”

Muhabbat supplements her farming income by doing embroidery work that she sells. She and the other women shear the sheep in the spring and use the wool to weave rugs and winter socks. They also use the sheep’s manure to make fuel briquettes for winter and fertilizer for their garden plots.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
