Title: Vietnam – Project for Adaption to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) – April 2023
Description:
Nguyen Thi Chi cuts broom sticks, ties coconut leaves to the sticks and inspects final products.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Chi, 45-years-old and married with two children, lives in An Hoa hamlet, My An commune, Thanh Phu district, in Ben Tre province. Without much family land, she had worked for others bundling brooms made from dried coconut fronds to earn some income. In 2016, she received a Co-Financing for Adaptation Fund (CFAF) grant that enabled her to invest in her own broom production facility, and to purchase the materials and equipment she needed.

The climatic and water conditions of her coastal community mainly favour aquaculture. But coconut is one of the main products and sources of income for people in the Mekong Delta, with more than 70 thousand hectares in production in Ben Tre province. In addition to the coconut fruit itself, all parts of the plant are used for a variety of products.

The integrated support Chi received from the project, including capital investment, help to strengthen her business plan, and capacity development, boosted her knowledge and confidence and enabled her to expand production.

Now, eight years later, Nguyen has escaped poverty, taking in an average of VND 10 million per month (US$ 410). She supports her family, and even provides stable part-time employment for 11 women in her community, allowing them to earn some income (VND 3 million, or about US$140 per month) and still have time to take care of families.

"I am very grateful to the AMD project. I have been able to build a spacious house, and my children are able to go to school. This is a dream that I have realized,” told Chi. She has big plans to register a trademark and create a brand for her product, which will increase its value. She also plans to expand production further so that she can create more jobs to bring more rural women out of poverty.

The Project for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta in the Ben Tre and Tra Vinh Provinces (AMD) strengthened the resilience and adaptive capacity of 54,000 smallholder farmer households by generating sustainable income opportunities and improved rural livelihoods, reaching an estimated 210,000 people. To this end, AMD invests in climate resilient, inclusive, and remunerative value chain opportunities, including coconut, fruits, and aquaculture.
