Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Mirzomudin Mirzoev, 55 years old, is the director of the Dusti branch of the "Mohii Tojik" corporation in Khatlon Region. He is married with five children, four daughters and one son. CASP sponsored a call for interest to receive innovative development ideas. Mirzomudin’s fish hatchery proposal was one of the few selected for funding and implementation.

Before Mirzomudin established the hatchery, all of Khatlon region lacked larvae. Fisheries had to import the eggs from other regions, which was very expensive, and lost a high percentage of them during transportation.

“The innovation project was a great support for our enterprise. Now we have a hatchery with all the equipment and tools we need to produce larvae ourselves.”

Mirzomudin has gone from buying larvae to producing it and selling it to other fish farmers in the region. He has five salaried staff working for him in the incubator workshop. Special in-service training provided as a part of the innovation project motivated the staff and expanded their technical skills.

No longer faced with the high cost of larvae, fish farming has become more cost effective for Mirzomudin, and he is able to pass the savings on to consumers. He stocks his five-hectare fishpond with 15,000 juvenile fish, which he sells for 50 somoni (US$ 4.50) per kilogram when the fish reach table size.

“Now that we have this product available locally, people will want to have fish on their tables. It will be cheaper – and healthier – than beef or mutton.”

After paying workers’ salaries and taxes, Mirzomudin is saving his profits with plans to construct new facilities and ponds for fish breeding.
