David Santos Huancas is 27 years old and one of the youngest workers in the Allima Cacao agricultural cooperative which brings together 400 families of small farmers in the Amazonian area of Chazuta, one hour from the province of Tarapoto, in the Peruvian region of San Martín. He was born and raised in Moyobamba, two hours from the city of Tarapoto, but in 2017 he came to Chazuta for work and decided to stay. He is now the product traceability supervisor, he monitors the entire process from grain storage to the entry of information into the system and the management of data to prepare the sales lots. During the implementation of the AGRIDigitalization project, David participated in the course in business management and in courses on food safety, good agricultural practices and e-commerce workshops to sell cocoa products and subproducts. “I learned a lot, and I have tried to use all that knowledge to bring value to the cooperative in order to position ourselves better and sell more. We are now implementing our own website and we make the most of all social networks. I think this is very important for young people because we not only generate profits, but also create job opportunities for young people and for the children of our farmer members,” he says. The AGRIdigitalization project is an IFAD initiative aimed at strengthening farmers’ organizations. It had a business intervention model which included training services, webpage updating, documents and videos translation, and positioning of products on digital platforms outside of traditional commerce. The purpose was to develop and strengthen a support model for organizations to access new markets through e-commerce. |
