Title: Peru - Rural Poor Stimulus Facility (RPSF): AGRIdigitalización – August 2022
Description: The consequences of climate change are also being felt at Allima Cacao, an agricultural cooperative which brings together 400 families of small farmers in the Amazonian area of Chazuta, one hour from the province of Tarapoto, in the Peruvian region of San Martín. The factory workers say that during the month of June, despite being a month in which there is no rainfall in the region, it rained constantly, affecting the drying process of cocoa beans, causing several of their lots not to reach the necessary quality standards and impacting the cooperative's and farmers' economy.

In the face of this, teamwork, creativity and resilience prevailed. They created retractable drying trays to replace the cloths on which they used to dry the cocoa beans. This allowed them to hide the treys under a roof during the rain and put them out under the sun when it stopped raining. In addition, they sought to diversify their income under a circular economy approach in which the cocoa pods are 100% utilized. “We should not only use the grain, which is 20%, but also the husk, mucilage, veins, etc.,” concludes Carlos Angulo, general manager of the cooperative.

The AGRIdigitalization project is an IFAD initiative aimed at strengthening farmers’ organizations. It had a business intervention model which included training services, webpage updating, documents and videos translation, and positioning of products on digital platforms outside of traditional commerce. The purpose was to develop and strengthen a support model for organizations to access new markets through e-commerce.
