Title: Tanzania - Reversing Land Degradation trends and increasing Food Security in degraded ecosystems of semi-arid areas of Tanzania (LDFS) – July 2023
Description: Farmers gather in a farmer field schools to learn from an extension worker valuable technique like conservation agriculture, including Minimum tillage pits (Jembe la Mzambia), pits that reduce the need for frequent tilling, minimizing soil disruption and promoting healthy growth and the Nine-seeds technology (Mbegu Tisa) which helps optimizes planting by strategically placing nine seeds, maximizing yield and resource utilization.

By embracing these techniques, farmers unlock a multitude of benefits including enhanced soil fertility: Reduced tillage protects soil structure and fosters a thriving microbial community; improved moisture retention: The pits act as natural reservoirs, allowing crops to access water for longer periods, especially during dry spells and Water conservation: Sustainable practices minimize overall water usage, a crucial factor in a changing climate.

Farmer field schools like this one are empowering communities to embrace sustainable practices, ensuring a brighter future for both their farms and the environment.
Reversing Land Degradation trends and increasing Food Security in degraded ecosystems of semi-arid areas of central Tanzania (LDFS) is one of 12 national projects under the Integrated Approach Pilot program on Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Sub-Saharan Africa (IAPFS). The project focuses on geographic areas with high levels of poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition of children under 5 years of age, land degradation and average annual rainfall. It also centres on areas where there may be conflict among communities related to access to and use of crop, grass and forest land and water resources.
