The consequences of climate change have significantly affected the work of the Nuwas. However, as beneficiaries of the Avanzar Rural government programme, one of the main benefits they received as was the construction of a water reservoir and a technical drip irrigation system. With this, they were able to prevent the lack of rain and droughts from affecting their crops and allowed the medicinal plants they work with in the nursery to continue growing, thus increasing the production of the NUWA infusion with which they support their families. In addition, the Nuwas received technical training from the Avanzar Rural programme team. They learned about the management and collection of medicinal plants in the nursery and also about organization methods. As a result, they created the Work Committee made up of 20 of the community's Nuwas, who represent all the other women. The Avanzar Rural Project is a priority in Peru’s Post-COVID 19 National Recovery Plan. It will improve family farmers’ productive capacity and access to markets in 101 districts of the Amazonas, Ancash, Cajamarca, Lima and San Martin departments. The project focuses on developing the competitiveness and resilience to climate change of family farmers, in particular women and youth, historically marginalized in economic decisions affecting rural communities. It also spreads the use of low-cost, efficient technologies for boosting productivity, accessing markets and mitigating climate change. Avanzar Rural will benefit 17,400 small agricultural producers organized in cooperatives, productive associations and their families, which represent a total number of 57,420 direct beneficiaries. |
