Title: Peru - Local Productive Development Project in the Highlands and Rainforest of Peru (Avanzar Rural) – August 2022
Description: Ruth Cumbia Sejekam is a 26-year-old, mother of a boy and a girl aged 7 and 9 respectively, and works as coordinator of the Work Committee of the Bosque de las Nuwas Association. Her workday starts every day at 5:00 a.m., preparing food for her children, dropping them off at school and going to work in the forest. There, Ruth is happy, but she also thinks that these are hours away from her children when she wonders what they are doing or if they are well. “We, Awajun women, are strong and courageous. My children are young, but nevertheless they are aware and when they see what I do they go, ‘wow, mom, you do all this stuff?’. I feel that they take pride and that is important for me and for all of us, because of the 70 women who protect the forest, 10 or 15 of us are young mothers and we all have the same concern,” reflects Ruth.

For her, the most important part of her work is to make people aware of the value of forests. She is convinced that through the information she provides to visitors she can help bring about many changes, and she is proud to feel the excitement of the people when they learn about her traditions: “When they get excited, I get excited too, and we all end up laughing.”

The Avanzar Rural Project is a priority in Peru’s Post-COVID 19 National Recovery Plan. It will improve family farmers’ productive capacity and access to markets in 101 districts of the Amazonas, Ancash, Cajamarca, Lima and San Martin departments.

The project focuses on developing the competitiveness and resilience to climate change of family farmers, in particular women and youth, historically marginalized in economic decisions affecting rural communities. It also spreads the use of low-cost, efficient technologies for boosting productivity, accessing markets and mitigating climate change.

Avanzar Rural will benefit 17,400 small agricultural producers organized in cooperatives, productive associations and their families, which represent a total number of 57,420 direct beneficiaries.
