On Tiago Jose Souza’s farm, okra packaging follows health standards, using clean packaging labeled with an organic guarantee seal. Together with his family, he has been growing vegetables for 25 years at the small farm Asa Branca in Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil. A few years after starting his business, Tiago discovered the Cooperxique Cooperative and joined it to accomplish his dream of becoming a more successful farmer by accessing to organic markets. Through the Farmers Organizations for Latin America project (FO4LA), which helped farmers organizations to improve, IFAD and the Cooperxique Cooperative have provided key support for Tiago and other farmers in Brazil to obtain an organic certification - extended by his own community members - to become an organic food producer. "Our cooperative members inspect our production and see if everything is up to standards. It’s called organic compliance", Tiago says. “Participatory certification helps us provide quality vegetables to schools, and my daughter is studying technical nutrition… she has had this idea since she was little, because I raised her here, and so the story will continue”, he points. FO4LA is a project implemented for the first time in Latin American to increase income and to improve livelihood, food and nutrition security and safety of family farmers, who are affiliated to targeted Farmers Organizations within the region. With financial support of the European Union (EU) IFAD acts as technical and administrative managing entity. The project has provided support to agricultural organizations, associations, cooperatives, and credit organizations to improve their management, institutional, technical, and governance capacities. Helping them eliminate these limitations has allowed family farmers and their organizations to better interact with other actors in the agricultural sector, as well as participate in markets and generate employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for the young rural population and rural women. It has allowed them to participate in dialogue and negotiation processes on public policies that affect them, thus contributing to the construction of more equitable and sustainable food systems. FO4LA has covered Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru, together with 15 agricultural organizations participating in value chains such as coffee, quinoa, cocoa and sugar cane, among others. |
