Title: Indonesia - Rural Empowerment and Agriculture Development Scaling-up Initiative (READ SI) – December 2023
Description: Female farmers showing the cocoa beans before planting at P4S (Self-Help Agricultural and Rural Training Center) Buana Reso, North Luwu, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The use of organic fertilizer aims to restore soil nutrients that have been saturated with chemicals so far.

Soil that has lost its fertility due to the use of chemical fertilizers for decades is the main problem with cocoa farming in North Luwu. Two other problems are the impact of climate change and the low level of farmer adoption of the teaching methods of farming and caring for cocoa gardens.

"I always emphasize to farmers to practice what we have trained. Because what proves success or not is when you do what you are taught. If you don't do it, it's impossible to get results," said Rusleli, who is the Chair of P4S and the North Luwu Cocoa Doctor Association (Ascodo).
