Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Emily Simika, is a 68-year-old widow and mother of four grown children from Makalani Village under TA Mpama in Mbulumbuzi EPA, Chiradzulu District. She used to be employed in a company, but returned to her village and started farming, when the company closed and she lost her job. With the loss of her husband, she relies on farming for her income and the occasional support from her children who live abroad. Due to a leg injury sustained in 2021 which limited her ability to engage in business activities, she has been relying on casual labour to manage her farming activities.

When cyclone Freddy hit in 2023, this heavily impacted her farming and she faced a number of challenges as a significant part of her field was washed away, impacting her harvest and income (she would normally be able to harvest 10 bags of maize, but following the cyclone, she was only able to harvest 3 bags). Emily also used to run a business selling goods, but it too was affected by the cyclone.

Feeling hopeless, when she was shortlisted for support from CRI, this gave her a new lease on life. Through the CRI she was able to access improved seeds, fertiliser, and training on good agricultural practices such as crop diversification (she grows soybeans, sweet potatoes and cassava). This allowed her to bounce back from the catastrophe that she faced.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
