Teresinha Gomes de Almeida, 74 years old, puts her hands on earth with a lot of vitality. She is part of the family farming production chain at the small farm Asa Branca in Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil. With organic food production, her family, collaborators and the community of Mossoró gained a healthy option in food security. In addition to producing organic food to sell to supermarkets and open-air markets, it also generates income and creates the opportunity for the community. IFAD provided the necessary support for she to obtain an organic certification - extended by his own community members - to become an organic food producer, and they guarantee that this only happened through the Cooperxique Cooperative and the FO4LA project. "And also, it'll ensure that I have income so that they can be in school, so that they don't have to come into agriculture." FO4LA is a project implemented for the first time in Latin American to increase income and to improve livelihood, food and nutrition security and safety of family farmers, who are affiliated to targeted Farmers Organizations within the region. With financial support of the European Union (EU) IFAD acts as technical and administrative managing entity. FO4LA has covered Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru, together with 15 agricultural organizations participating in value chains such as coffee, quinoa, cocoa and sugar cane, among others. |
