Title: | Indonesia - Rural Empowerment and Agriculture Development Scaling-up Initiative (READ SI) – December 2023 |
Description: |
A farmer sells a bag of wet cocoa beans from his garden's harvest to Rusman, a MARS partner cocoa bean collector in Bakka Village, Sabbang, North Luwu, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The price of wet cocoa beans, which has continued to rise in the last three years, has attracted farmers' interest in returning to cocoa farming after previously switching to planting oil palm. Even though the price of dry cocoa beans is three times higher, farmers prefer to sell their harvest in wet conditions. The reason is more practical because there is no need to bother drying cocoa beans in the yard of the house which is at risk of damage if done during the rainy season like now. |
