Title: Malawi - Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) – January 2024
Description: Rhoda Zululu, a mother of three children, is a farmer from GUH Binalui TA Somba, Blantyre. Last year the village was hit by cyclone Freddy, her house had a large crack and there was water inside. Given the heavy rains, Rhoda wanted to go and check on her fields and crops which she found had been flooded and destroyed. She was desperate.

In the past, Rhoda used to plant soya which she used only to make porridge for her family’s consumption. Soya seeds were expensive, and she could only afford to purchase what she needed for herself and the family. This year, after having received 25 kg of soya seeds from CRI, she has planted more hectares and expects to harvest more bags, some of which she will sell to earn extra income. Through the project, Rhoda has also learnt about soil erosion and how to prevent it using different techniques.

IFAD’s role in a crisis is to build resilience and capacity of rural communities to mitigate the impact of shocks, while protecting long term development gains. For this reason, the Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) was set-up, to protect the livelihoods and build resilience in rural communities by addressing the urgent needs caused by the crises. One such crisis was cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi in February 2023 and heavily affected the Southern region of the country.
